Syndic

“My ancestors had been for many years counselors and syndics…” (pg. 27)

A syndic is a government official, one that is appointed to represent a corporation, a university, or any other organization dealing with business transactions. Frankenstein explains how this honorable position has gained his father, and consequently his family, respect. Shelley mentions the syndics not only to establish Frankenstein's respectable lineage, but also to show the extent to which he allows his reputation to be marred.
