Old-Fashioned Remedies

“…restored him to animation by rubbing him with brandy, and forcing him to swallow a small quantity.” (pg. 20)

During the 18th century, when medicine was not of very high quality or abundance, alcohol was commonly used for medicinal purposes. It was often used to alleviate pain and discomfort that was caused by various illnesses and injuries, some of which include the common cold, fever, broken limbs, toothaches, and frostbite. Shelley mentions this rudimentary first-aid resource to create a more realistic setting. Alcohol was likely the only thing during this time period that could relieve the maladies of Frankenstein following his trek through the Arctic.
